CATALYST Works
   Providing Unlimited Educational Opportunities
CATALYST makes the news in Jamaican media
. . . The programme helps students in several ways. They help the needy with school fees and train mentors. They also donated several books to the Homework Centre's library on Tower Street. But most of all what the programme seeks to do each year is prepare students for tertiary education and help them find scholarships . . .

. . . Ramone Williams, a fifth former at St. Georges College, is now a student in the programme. He is from Parade Gardens in Kingston where the homework programme operates. He is a straight 'A' student who wants to be a computer engineer. The help from Catalyst is making that dream seem possible . . .

Sharie came second in this year's Essay Competition, with an which in which Samuel describes as "excellent and highly organized".
Like Ronesha and Sanjay B., Sharie came, saw and made her mark and let everyone know that she is here to stay. From the start, she was never one to back down from a challenge, and being a new student on the Program, did not affect her. And why should it? These are all inner-city students determined to excel, despite the socio-economic constraints they are faced with, and more importantly the emotional challenges they encounter on a daily basis.

She is an intelligent young woman who have overcame a lot of struggles to be where she is today, and
CATALYST is proud to have her as a member.

Nothing is more hurtful than having people declare that because one is from a certain background; he/she is not supposed to excel in life. One is not supposed to - or rather, not allowed to - transcend the criticism and break the barriers. CATALYST believes differently and we are ready to equip these students with all the tools they need to bring about an uprising, to break the barriers of the social hierarchy, and let the world know that they are from the “ghetto” and yet they have made a name for themselves.

Sharie, Chantelle, William, Ronesha, Delmar, Christine, Chantol, Christopher, Chatoto, Davia, Pablo, Denise, Sanjay B., Sanjay C., Inisha, Jamaila, Ramone, and all the other
CATALYST students from Southside, and the students who have passed through the system - the CATALYST Alumni, are all proof that one can transcend. These students are proof that one can overcome whatever hardship they are faced with. The first winner of the inaugural essay competition - Ramone - said that he believes the “ghetto” is like an entrapped treasure chest, with some of the best jewels locked inside just waiting for a chance, an opportunity to prove how beautiful a jewel it can be. This is undoubtedly true, and other students have gone on to reiterate what Ramone has said.

The
CATALYST Mission Relationship, with the help of the First Congregational Church in Columbus, Ohio, and the Grace & Staff Community Development Foundation in Kingston, Jamaica are giving these students the opportunity to transcend and to achieve.
