CATALYST Works
   Providing Unlimited Educational Opportunities
CATALYST makes the news in Jamaican media
. . . The programme helps students in several ways. They help the needy with school fees and train mentors. They also donated several books to the Homework Centre's library on Tower Street. But most of all what the programme seeks to do each year is prepare students for tertiary education and help them find scholarships . . .

. . . Ramone Williams, a fifth former at St. Georges College, is now a student in the programme. He is from Parade Gardens in Kingston where the homework programme operates. He is a straight 'A' student who wants to be a computer engineer. The help from Catalyst is making that dream seem possible . . .

Inisha attends Holy Childhood High School where her teachers describe her as a very confident, hard working, diligent student. It can be said that Inisha is on a mission to change her community, maybe eventually her country. Who knows?

“I am deeply rooted in the belief that one can be influenced by his environment as much as one can influence his surroundings. As “a girl from the ghetto”, society expects that I will automatically become a failure in everything I do. Society expects me to succumb to the challenges that face inner-city youths. For example, in my community I have seen where girls like me have turned to prostitution because of poverty. Some have even entered into affairs with men who are older than themselves. The end result of this is that they have become a statistics due to teenage pregnancy. Eventually these girls become school drop-outs if they have no one to encourage them to further their education after they have their babies. There is also an increase in the breakdown of family structure for example in the inner-city the matriarchal family structure is dominant thus we find young girls going in search of a father figure. This action is triggered by the lack of positive role models around them to instill good values.

I am driven by success and the desire to transcend what society expects of me. I do not profess to be perfect but I am constantly aware of the challenges that have and will come my way. I intend to change the stereotypical view of the inner-city girl; redefining myself through general socialization, excelling at every opportunity and being resolute in my decisions.

The influences that have motivated me throughout life include the motivational speeches given by my mother about staying in school; my teachers about achieving our goals; the employees at the L.I.C.K. center who instill good values in myself and others”.

Her hobbies include drawing, writing stories and playing tennis. With a present GPA of 2.7, Inisha hopes to be an Entrepreneur.
Doesn't Inisha (girl in the forefront in blue and brown) has a beautiful smile.
