CATALYST makes the news in Jamaican media
. . . The programme helps students in several ways. They help the needy with school fees and train mentors. They also donated several books to the Homework Centre's library on Tower Street. But most of all what the programme seeks to do each year is prepare students for tertiary education and help them find scholarships . . .

. . . Ramone Williams, a fifth former at St. Georges College, is now a student in the programme. He is from Parade Gardens in Kingston where the homework programme operates. He is a straight 'A' student who wants to be a computer engineer. The help from Catalyst is making that dream seem possible . . .

"It's All About Me" Essay Competition
Another activity that is hosted by CATALYST is the annual "It's All About Me" Essay Competition, which started in 2005.  The personal essay is a very important aspect of the college application process, and the contest gives the students some experience in writing an essay. CATALYST students who have completed college in the United States judge the entries and collect money among themselves to award cash prizes. This is there way of giving back to CATALYST at the moment.

2007 "It's All About Me" Essay Competition - Winner

Congratulations to all the students who submitted an essay! According to this year's judge, Samuel Pyne,  the essays were more inspired and reflected an increase in social awareness on the parts of the students, as compared to last year's essays. Collectively, the essays provided a glimpse into that coveted Holy Grail; the soul of a talented inner-city student. Individually, however, each essay provided a window into the unique experience of each of these young scholars; encapsulating their dreams, hopes and underlying motivations all within the context of each individual's sense of self and community. He goes on to say that a very important change was made to the grading system for this year's essays; grammar and usage now being an important component of the overall score. This was done in order to facilitate the transition of colloquial phrases into formal English grammar. Finally, he said it was a pleasure to judge the essays. Team CATALYST wish to express their gratitude to Samuel! Take a look at the winners . . .
