CATALYST Works
   Providing Unlimited Educational Opportunities
CATALYST makes the news in Jamaican media
. . . The programme helps students in several ways. They help the needy with school fees and train mentors. They also donated several books to the Homework Centre's library on Tower Street. But most of all what the programme seeks to do each year is prepare students for tertiary education and help them find scholarships . . .

. . . Ramone Williams, a fifth former at St. Georges College, is now a student in the programme. He is from Parade Gardens in Kingston where the homework programme operates. He is a straight 'A' student who wants to be a computer engineer. The help from Catalyst is making that dream seem possible . . .

Taneisha Thompson - CATALYST Alumnus
2003

Taneisha is a very modest young lady. After graduating from Benedict College, she was accepted into a special programme offered by Ernst & Young, who paid her Graduate school fees, and also provided her with an excellent internship. In 2005, she completed her Masters degree and the first part of her CPA exams. She is now working as an Accountant with a major firm in Washington D.C. In May 2007, Taneisha married.

Three and a half years ago I embarked upon the adventure of a lifetime. I left my home, family, friends and my country in search of my future. I left with only a small suitcase, a scholarship letter and one hundred and thirteen dollars. I am from a small rural community in Jamaica, where only those with the financial capabilities are given the opportunities to succeed. Most young people in my community never made it beyond High School and even when they did they were destined for a life of poverty and hardship. However, not even the lack of opportunity or the lack of hope imposed by my surroundings could curb my drive to break all the rules and achieve my goals.

From the moment I
left Jamaica, the CATALYST Mission Relationship has been providing me with support and helping me to adjust to my new environment. It scares me to think about where I would be today if it weren’t for the efforts of Heather Biggers and the other members of CATALYST. Team CATALYST has greatly impacted my life; it has helped to make it possible for me to overcome the adversities that came with living in rural Jamaica and has helped to provide me with the tools necessary to survive and make a difference in this world.

In about five month
s I will graduate from Benedict College with Bachelor of Science in Accounting, and I am sure that it would not have been possible without CATALYST. I am truly grateful to the First Congregational Church and the members of Grace & Staff for all their support. The CATALYST Mission has impacted my life and the lives of others in Jamaica, thanks for giving me the chance to build myself up through education. I am proof that education can be the difference between living a life of poverty and being able to capitalize on opportunities to break the chains of poverty - to one day become a success.

Thank You.
