CATALYST makes the news in Jamaican media
. . . The programme helps students in several ways. They help the needy with school fees and train mentors. They also donated several books to the Homework Centre's library on Tower Street. But most of all what the programme seeks to do each year is prepare students for tertiary education and help them find scholarships . . .

. . . Ramone Williams, a fifth former at St. Georges College, is now a student in the programme. He is from Parade Gardens in Kingston where the homework programme operates. He is a straight 'A' student who wants to be a computer engineer. The help from Catalyst is making that dream seem possible . . .

- Samuel Pyne, Judge
Ronesha Rhoden

Ronesha writes a powerful essay, in which she discusses the stigma facing inner-city kids attending prestigious high schools. She demonstrates a keen awareness of the socio-ethnic divisions that separates her from the more affluent students at her school and
contrasts this vividly against the her home community where "…violence is like a raging bull". This is a very inspirational essay that sticks to the insides like warm winter stew. She communicates her ideas very effectively and shares her motivation and guiding philosophies and the inspirational writings that re-energises her spirit.

Delmar Francis
Go to Essay
Delmar writes a serious essay in which he gives us a glimpse into his life through the lens of two fundamentally life-changing tragedies; the untimely deaths of his uncle, as well as one of his close friends. In spite of this, however, he searches for hope amid the despair and finds inspiration in the memory of his lost friend. Delmar writes a reflective and organized essay and for this I award him a second place position.

Sharie Brown
Sharie has cultivated a disciplined and mature writing style that is very impresive. She writes a balanced essay that is very organized, indicates a strong sense of self and shows an appreciation of battles won as well as an awareness of future challenges. She clearly articulates the core issues in her life and for the most part, she does so without the unnecessary verbiage or irrelevant details. Throughout her essay, she keeps the reader connected to a central theme; facing and overcoming a myriad of challenges.

Like Ronesha, she discusses the stigma faced as an inner-city student at a prestigious high school and I commend her for touching such a sensitive issue without resentment or bitterness. This is a excellent and highly organized essay.
